Don’t Say Merry Christmas

and don’t say Happy New Year either, neither other merry-merries nor happy-happies.

First: You are contributing to the overloading of communication systems. This is a distributed denial of service, and urgent messages may get dropped and lost, just because of your unimportant greetings. Also, as a consequence of Shannon’s information theory, when the string “Merry Christmas” occurs so often every now and then, its probability of occurring is high, and therefore the amount of information it carries is low, dropping asymptotically to zero.

Second: You are disturbing the recipients by implicitly obliging them to respond. A part of this is due to the currently established moral values of stigmatising people who don’t respond to greetings with the label ‘rude’. This also aggravates the previous problem of communication system overloading by a factor of at least two. The recipient isn’t necessarily happy nor grateful for receiving such message from you. He/she may be busy, and your interruption is wasting his/her precious time.

Third: You are celebrating something which is not even worthy of celebration. What really happened on that day, anyway? Are you really sure that it happens on that day? Do you really know what you are celebrating and understand why you are celebrating it? Can you know? Well, in the first place, you can’t know; so much time has passed, and all you can do is to believe. Do you really need to celebrate that? Will you make someone happy? You behaviour is simply conditioned, and you are not showing intelligence as you are supposed to be exhibiting.

And last but not least, don’t obey any of whatever imperation I expose here. If you want to celebrate it, just celebrate it. Just do what you want. Just live. As simple as that. Also, in this occasion, I would like to express my gratitude to myself for being honoured to be the first to violate the imperations I created myself by saying Merry Christmas to y’all, if you really want, and Happy New Year, if you really need. And no, I am not inconsistent; I am just flexible.

Santai rik. Apa salahnya kalo cuman ingin meramaikan? Agar dunia ini hingar bingar dengan kebisingan manusia?
